  • Description

There was a change in the London scene, October 17, when the guards at Buckingham Palace went on duty inside the Palace railings instead of outside, as previously.

A War Office order last week announced that the charge was being made because for most of the year there are so many people outside the Palace that it is impossible for the sentries to patrol their beats in the proper manner.

It was a sad day for sightseers and tourists. As the sentry boxes were moved into the Palace forecourt it became impossible to have oneself photographed standing next to one of the sentries on duty. Curious crowds pressed their noses through the Palace railings to watch the guards marching up and down in their new positions.

Earlier this year there was an incident in which a sentry and one of the crowd of onlookers were said to have bumped into each other.
