FICHAUD: "Ten of the world's best chess players took part in the tournament. The end came abruptly and was a bit of an anti-climax. The two Soviet players who had been tied for the lead, former world champion, Mikhail Tal and current champion, Anatoly Karpov played two draws with their opponents. For may it was a disappointing and for other it was more predictable."

PRENTICE: "I do not believe personally that they are trying for blood. They are good friends and well maybe quite happy to split first and second."

REPORTER: "Politics going to play any sort of a role in this thing?"

PRENTICE: "Not really, I mean if they wouldn't come from the same environment yes, that would have a bearing, but Karpov has defended his title very well, in the sense that he has played a lot which Bobby Fischer didn't do after winning the world championship."

FICHAUD: "The tournament drew more than ten thousand spectators. The total prize money of one hundred and ten thousand dollars to the highest in tournament play history. Tal and Karpov will split the forty-three thousand dollars in top prize money. Plans are already underway for another Challenge Cup next year."
