INTRODUCTION: Trampolining, once a sport dominated by the United States after it became internationally recognised in 1964, is becoming increasingly popular in the Soviet Union -- the home of athletes in all kinds of gymnastic sports.

SYNOPSIS: The 12th National Trampoline Competition was held recently in Voronezh, in the Central soviet Union, with me and women competing in separate events. A hundred and ten athletes took part. The sport has some ten thousand followers in the country.

Evgenyi Yanes, nineteen-year-old student from Krasnodar, in the southern USSR, won the men's event with this stylish performance. Yanes was last year's World Champion. Later in the contest he went on to win in the men's pairs event as well.

Trampolining grew into a sport in its own rights after originating as a training aid for athletes in other fields -- like acrobatics, gymnastics, and diving.

In the women's pairs event -- more properly called 'synchronous jumps' -- it was Olga Starikova and Svetlana Levina, who took the honours. The pair were last year's World Champions.

Soviet trampolinists have only been competing on the world scene since 1973, when they took part in that year's European Championships in Scotland and won three of the four gold medals. Two years later, they took all four golds at the European Championships in Switzerland. On their performance here, Starikova and Levina are prospects for the Soviet team in this year's European Championships in West Germany in June.
