    chinese Deputy Prime Minister Keng Piao arrived in Malta on Saturday (29 July) for a five-day official visit designed to strengthen political, economic and cultural relations.

    SYNOPSIS: On their arrival at Luqa Airport, near Valletta, Keng Piao and his wife were greeted by Maltese cabinet ministers and officials. Malta and China established diplomatic relations in 1972, and Keng Piao is the first Chinese Minister to visit the Mediterranean island since then. But Maltese Prime Minister, Dom Mintoff, has made three trips to Peking over the past six years.

    Talks between Mr. Mintoff and Keng Piao were scheduled for Saturday evening at the Prime Minister's offices in the Castille Palace.

    But Mr. Mintoff was slightly delayed, and had to hurry to his appointment with the Chinese leader.

    Shortly afterwards, keng Piao arrived with a police escort for preliminary talks. Malta will cease to be a British military base from March next year. Peking has already given the strategically important island a loan, at low interest rates. During his stay in Malta, Keng Piao will tour Red China Dock, which was built with Chinese aid. Malta has a technical and economic agreement with China which was signed by Mr. Mintoff during his first visit to Peking in 1972.
