Echternach is known throughout the world for its dancing processions. The basis of the dancing is a unique religious manifestation. Just what, though, is somewhat obscure, and has been the subject of considerable controversy between theologians, historians, and those versed in folklore.
Now, however has succeeded in explaining with certainty the origins of the custom, which has been jealously guarded down the centuries by them inhabitants of Echternach.
It first had mention as an ancient custom in 1542. Groups of singers, reciting the litany of St. Willibrord, open the procession followed by the dancers. The form of the dance is to progress steps forward and two backwards.
The first group of dancers in those pictures came from Germany, and marched for three days to Echternach to take part in the celebrations. Others are inhabitants of the Eifel region.
