  • Description

In India, at least 28 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in a collision between two trains in Bombay on Tuesday night(18 April).

SYNOPSIS: The disaster happened when an express locomotive ploughed into the back of suburban passenger train. There were more than one-hundred passengers in the rear compartment of the suburban train, which was reserved exclusively for women. The Press Trust of India said most of the dead were believed to be women and children. The rear carriage was smashed almost beyond recognition.

The morning after the crash, only six bodies had been properly identified. The disaster occurred near the Bassein Road railway station, about 35 miles (60 kilometres) north of Bombay. The express was bound from Ahmedabad, in Western India to Bombay. India's Minister for Railways, Mr Mahdu Dandavate, went to the crash scene to supervise rescue operations. Villagers living nearby arrived with axes to help rescue workers cut through the twisted metal of the wrecked trains and free the people still trapped inside. The injured were taken to hospital.
