  • Description

Italy, wracked by political and industrial problems, has undergone further disruption. Thousands of students demonstrated on Tuesday (29 October) to press for changes in the country's education system.

More than 10,000 students took part in the Rome march.

Italy's education system has suffered considerably over the years because of the country's series of political and economic crises.

An international survey of 22 countries last year showed that -- except for its elementary school system -- Italy was at the bottom of the list. It was superior only to Chile, Thailand, India and Iran in Secondary school education.

The country's educational system is inadequate. When the new term opened recently, the educational authorities had to fit 11 million students into schools built for half that number.

The student demonstration came on a day when Rome Airport employees went on a four-hour strike. And this was only one in a series of widespread strikes in the country.

Italy's problems seem to be snowballing as it searches for a new Government. The last Government was dissolved more than three weeks ago.
