  • Description

Cyprus began recovering from two weeks of bitter fighting on Wednesday (3 July) after the signing of a peace agreement for the troubled island in Geneva, Switzerland.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday night (30 July) by the Greek Foreign Minister George Macros, Turkish Foreign Minister Turan Gunes and British Foreign Secretary James Callaghan.

It called on Turkish and all other forces -- including guerrillas -- to stop hostile activities and provided for buffer zones to keep rival forces apart.....but it left their size to be fixed later.

The Ministers said all prisoners detained in the recent conflict on the island would be released. Armed forces and war materials will also be reduced under a phased plan, details of which have not yet been decided.

The agreement was worded to provide for further negotiations on the constitution of Cyprus and the operation of separate administrations for Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriot minority.

The Ministers decided to start another session of the peace talks in Geneva on 8 August. The newly sworn-in Cyprus President, Mr. Glafkos Clerides and the leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community Mr. Rauf Denktash, will attend the later talks.

Mr. Callaghan adopted the role of mediator in Geneva between Mr. Macros and Mr. Gunes over six days of talks. At times the negotiations seemed on the point of braking down, but success came 24 hours after Mr. Callaghan issued a virtual ultimatum to the effect that Greece or Turkey must decide to compromise or risk seemingly insoluble problems in Cyprus.
