  • Description

Some 20,000 Irish Catholics and supporters of the Civil Rights Association avoided the feared confrontation with British troops as an illegal protest march passed off peacefully. The organisers of the march altered the route and, instead of going for the centre of Newry - only about five miles(eight kms) from the border with the Irish Republic -- which was sealed off by troops and police, the protesters paraded around a housing estate which was their rallying point.

A march organiser called on the demonstrators to agree to a non-violent protest.
