  • Description

THOUSANDS OF CZECHOSLOVAKS IN PRAGUE TODAY (FRIDAY) PAID HOMAGE TO STUDENT JAN PALACH, WHO BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH LAST WEEK IN PROTEST AGAINST WHAT HE BELIEVED TO BE HIS COUNTRY'S LOSS OF FREEDOM. FROM DAWN, PEOPLE OF ALL AGES SILENTLY QUEUED IN THE COLD TO FILE PAST THE 21-YEAR-OLD STUDENT'S COFFIN, LYING IN STATE AT PRAGUE'S CHARLES UNIVERSITY.

BY MID-AFTERNOON, STUDENT ORGANISERS SAID THAT AT LEAST 40,000 PEOPLE HAD PAID THEIR RESPECTS TO THE YOUNG MAN WHO HAS BECOME THE NATION'S NEWEST HERO.

THE HUGE QUEUE OF MOURNERS TOOK UP TO THREE HOURS TO PASS.

WEEPING WOMEN AND YOUNG PEOPLE CARRIED SPRAYS OF FLOWERS AND WREATHS TO LAY NEAR THE COFFIN. BUT THE UNIVERSITY COURTYARD SOON BECAME A SEA OF FLOWERS AND MANY HAD TO BE PLACED IN THE FLAGSTONE ENTRANCE.

ALL WORK AND MOVEMENT IN THE HEART OF PRAGUE CEASED AT NOON FOR FIVE MINUTES IN TRIBUTE TO PALACH.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FEAR THAT TOMORROW'S FUNERAL MAY BE USED BY SOME IRRESPONSIBLE ELEMENTS AS AN EXCUSE TO STAGE INCIDENTS.

A CROWD OF UP TO 100,000 IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE BURIAL OF PALACH IN PRAGUE'S OLSANY CEMETERY.
