MAVROS: "The public opinion was taken by surprise with the announcement of the agreement between the U.S.A. and Greece on the American bases in this country. It is a manoeuvre which aims at facilitating the approval by Congress the Turkish-American agreement of last year, which found a tremendous resistance in the United States, because it violates, besides the charter of the United Nations and the Helsinki Agreement also it violates the American law which prohibits the supply of military equipment to a country which has used it for aggression. The only way to get it was to have a similar agreement with Greece. On this occasion, this service is offered by the Greek government to the U.S. Government. This undermines the equilibrium of power in the Aegean, will increase the Turkish intransigence and will make impossible any dialogue with the Turks."

Background: Political violence has flared again in Athens, only two days after the United States and Greece signed a defence agreement giving the Americans continued use of facilities at four military bases. Five bomb attacks around Athens damaged cars belonging to U.S. servicemen. No one claimed immediate responsibility for the bomb attacks, which followed a more peaceful display of opposition to the defence agreement. Groups antagonistic to the agreement and to Greece's alleged return to the military wing to NATO protested in Athens on Friday (29 July).

Mr.George Mavros , MP., leader of the Greek Democratic Union and Major parliamentary Opposition leader, on the occasion of the initialling of the new Defence Cooperation Agreement between Greece and the U.S. as well as Greece's announcement of participation in the forthcoming NATO naval manoeuvres, while the Government says Greece is off the military wing of the Alliance, made the following statement.

(May be intercut with the demonstration of the students at the Polytechnic School of this evening)
Our question: How do you see the new greco-american agreement on the U.S. bases in Greece.??
SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators gathered at the Athens Polytechnic school. They included opponents of foreign bases on Greek soil, supporters of the Committee for International Detente and Peace, and students. Banner slogans ranged from "Greece of NATO" to "Americans, murderers of the Peoples, out!" Police had banned the demonstrators from marching to the city centre, but that didn't deter their enthusiasm. The defence agreement, lasting four years, provides Greece with more direct control over the bases, and increase Greece's military strength. In that time, the United States has promised to supply Greece defence aid worth seven hundred million dollars. A year ago, the United States agreed to provide Turkey with a reported one billion dollars' aid over four years. The significance of this similar agreement with Greece was clear to opposition leader, George Mavros:
