  • Description

The trick-and-fancy log rolling champions of Japan -- 21-year-old Hitoshi Adachi and 20-year-old Tfutofa Itok -- won the world title in that event at the Lumberjack Championship Games in Hayward, Wisconsin, Sunday (1 August).

The two Japanese, who were dressed in native costume, provided one of the highlights of the three-day competition among lumberjacks from Japan, Australia, Canada and the United States. An estimated 4,000 persons watched the final day's events on Sunday.

Adachi and Itok used a square timber in the trick-and-fancy log rolling, or "birling" as it is officially called. They did not do as well with the round timber used in the North American birling event.

Champion Japanese log roller Cakaiki Nakajifa did not fare well either in the North American birling. He was eliminated early in the competition.
