  • Description

Sir Clarence Gibb for Britain and Signor Enrico Mattei for Italy headed the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of Italy's first thermo-nuclear power station at Latina, south of Rome, November 20.

Scrolls signed by the two men and recording the event as a joint project by Britain and Italy were inserted in the ceremonial stone for posterity.

The ceremony marked the material start to Italy's entry into the circle of nations producing atomic energy for peaceful purposes.

When completed in 1962 the plant will have enough power to supply the electricity needs of Rome.

Sir Clarence is head of the British company engaged on the project and Signor Mattei is President of the state-owned Petroleum and Atomic Energy Commission.
