  • Description

ON AUG 20, THE FINAL DAY OF THE UNITED STATES A.A.U. SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LOS ANGELES, FOUR WORLD SWIMMING RECORDS WERE ESTABLISHED, BRINGING THE TOTAL FOR THE THREE-DAY MEETING TO TEN.

IN THE 100-METERS BUTTERFLY, 17-YEAR OLD FRED SCHMIDT OF WINNETKA, ILLINOIS, WON IN 58.6 SECONDS, ONE TENTH OF A SECOND FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS WORLD RECORD SET UP LAST YEAR BY A FELLOW AMERICAN.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FINAL DAY'S RACING WAS UNDOUBTEDLY THE 400-METERS FREESTYLE, WHICH ONCE AGAIN BROUGHT TOGETHER JAPAN'S TSUYHOSHI YAMANAKA AND HIS LONGTIME RIVAL, MURRAY ROSE OF AUSTRALIA. YAMANAKA HAD BEATEN ROSE TO CREATE A NEW WORLD RECORD FOR THE 200-METERS FREESTYLE ON AUG 18, AND WAS DETERMINED TO BEAT HIM OVER THE LONGER DISTANCE. ROSE HAD BEEN THE VICTOR AT THEIR PREVIOUS 400-METERS MEETINGS IN THE 1956 AND 1960 OLYMPIC GAMES.

YAMANAKA WAS TRAILING BY ALMOST HALF A LENGTH WHEN HE TURNED FOR THE FINAL HUNDRED METERS, BUT HE OVERTOOK ROSE TO WIN IN AN AMERICAN RECORD TIME OF 4 MINUTES 17.5 SECONDS ... THREE TENTHS OF A SECOND AHEAD OF ROSE.
