Background: Rapid growth in demand for Hungarian manufactured goods is providing an efficient economy in Hungary through export trade. Some of the major customers are countries of the Middle East and North Africa -- although Hungary enjoys substantial markets in the West. A familiar sight in several Soviet cities, in California and Kentucky, USA, and throughout South America, Africa and parts of Western Europe is the Hungarian designed and built 'Ikarus' articulated bus. Irarus has become the largest producer of big buses in Europe -- last year (1981) 13,000 vehicles were produced and the company plans increased production this year. Budapest's May-Day jeans factory is turning out 1.2 million pairs of Levi Strauss jeans annually under licence from the U.S. parent company. The biggest proportion of Hungary's exports is composed of materials and components although agricultural produce and foodstuffs are high on the export list.
