Background: In Spain, local boxer Roberto Castanon pummelled Britain's Dave Needham to defeat on Saturday night (16 December) and retained his European Featherweight boxing title when the referee stopped the fight in the fifth round. Castanon was defending the title for the third time this year.
SYNOPSIS: The fight took place in Leon, in Northern Spain. The defender, Roberto Castanon of Spain, in the dark trunks, landed several sharp jabs on British challenger Dave Needham's jaw in the first two rounds. He had the English-man reeling on two occasions with a dazzling display of power punching. Here, in the third round Needham came back early with some powerful looping hooks to the Spaniards head but he failed to seriously threaten Castanon.
Twenty-five year old Castanon opened a cut in twenty-seven year-old Needham's right cheek with a barrage of punches in the third round, but Needham continued into the fourth round. Castanon sustained his assault and at one point the referee made Needham take a standing count of eight.
Ninety seconds into the fifth round Needham's cut was bleeding freely, an the referee called the doctor.
The doctor's verdict was that the cut was serious enough for the referee to stop the fight, with seven rounds still to go. And so Roberto Castanon once again retained the European Feather-weight title. It was a popular win for his home crowd.
