    Fires continued to burn in the deserted centre of Managua, Nicaragua, on Friday (29 December) as more slight tremors were felt.

    Many families have left the city entirely, seeking refuge in the surrounding countryside. One such family, that of Augustine Maceo, was warned of the impending disaster by a neighbour who felt the first termor. They fled from their home to the outskirts of the capital.

    Later they returned and salvaged what was left of their belongings. They loaded their furniture onto a truck and drove to Masaya, 20 miles (32 kms) southwest of Managua to stay with relatives.

    They said they would never return to the capital again.

    SYNOPSIS: Managua, the earthquake devastated capital of Nicaragua, was virtually deserted on Friday as small fires still raged in many of the city's crumbling buildings.

    Augustine Maceo's home was demolished by the earthquake. His family escaped uninjured when a neighbour felt the initial tremor and warned them of the impending danger. They fled their house to the outskirts of the city.

    Thousands of people fled from the capital seeking shelter in the surrounding countryside. Food remained scarce despite a massive flow of relief supplies from abroad.

    The Maceo's returned to their home and loaded their belongings onto a truck. They had found refuge with relatives in Masaya, southwest of Managua.

    Augustine's ???0-year-old father was relieved to have left Managua. He vowed that he would never return to the capital again.
