    More than 1,00 candidates have filed nominations for the elections. The Prime Minister is unopposed in his constituency. But he has a major task maintaining the popularity of the ruling Awami League in the face of concerted opposition.

    SYNOPSIS: The Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, received a rousing reception from thousands of supporters when he started his official campaign for the March elections this week. These were the scenes in the town of Jamalpur as the leader embarked on a strenuous speaking tour. Sheikh Mujib himself is unopposed in his own constituency. But he has a major task winning support for his Awami League in the fade of concerted opposition.

    A total of eleven-hundred candidates have filed nominations for the country's three-hundred constituencies, Sheikh Mujib will be leading the Awami League in contesting all these constituencies. The major opposition comes from the National Socialist party, which also has three-hundred candidates in the field. The chairman of the party was target for an assassination attempt earlier this month. The pro-Moscow National Awami Party has field nominations for two-hundred-and-fifty constituencies, and the Pro-Peking branch of the same party for two-hundred seats.
