Background: Alan Jones of Australia rounded off a superb Formula One motor racing season on Sunday (5 October) with a win in the United States Grand Prix -- confirming his world championship. He had an easy win, finishing ahead of his williams team-mate, Carlos Reutemann of Argentina.

SYNOPSIS: Carlos Reutemann finished the fourteen-race world series in third position. Although Jones was back in fifth position on the grid he drove like a champion, soon leaving the Renault of Rene Arnoux far behind.

His one serious challenger was Bruno Giacomelli who had been fastest in every practice with his Alfa Romeo. He set the pace early in the race, but again the Italian's promise turned to disaster when he was forced to retire on the thirty-first lap with electrical problems.

Nelson Piquet held second place for 24 laps until he spun off and ended up in a catching fence. For the Brazilian, it was a disastrous end to a very promising season.

Despite his crash, Piquet still had enough points to retain second place in the championship 13 points, behind Jones. During the first half of the race, Giacomelli built up a lead of 12 seconds, but as has been proved often in this championship, it's not always the most powerful or the fastest cars which take flag.

Giacomelli kept going further and further until he was lapping some cars only half way through.

But, one the thirty first lap he was forced to slow down and the gap began to close.

With Giacomelli out of the race, Jones took over. The two Williams drivers led for the rest of the race with Jones at one stage knocking two seconds off the two-year-old circuit record. For the Saudia Leyland team, it was fitting end to the championship and not the first time they had finished first and second. Didier Pironi finished in third place and a fighting drive by Elio De Angelis was rewarded with fourth. Mario Andretti, who had failed to score a world championship point this season, managed to take sixth place behind Jacques Laffite. It was Jones' tenth grand prix win and one, he said after the race, that he most enjoyed.

With five wins under his belt this season, Jones decided he needed a good rest. "All I want is to go home and see my wife and child," he said.
