    The Roman Catholic Bishops of Francophone West Africa met in Bamako, Mali, from the 13th to 17th February to examine the agenda of the coming bishops' synod at Rome and to suggest matters of concern to the church in Francophone West Africa.

    The Bishops are the Permanent Council of the Episcopal Conference of Francophone West Africa. They are Cardinal Zoungrana, Archbishop of Ougadougou; Monsignor Bernard Yago, Archbishop of Abidjan and President of the Council; Monsignor Bernardin Gantin, Archbishop of Cotonou: Monsignor Hyacin the Thiandoum, Archbishop of Dakar; Monsignor Luc Sangare, Archbishop of Bamako; Monsignor Robert Dosseh, Archbishop of Lome; Monsignor Pierre Lecrere, Archbishop-Bishop of Segou and President to the Commission for Islamic-Christian Dialogue: Monsignor Prosper Dodds, Bishop of St. Louis; Monsignor Anthyme Bayala, Bishop of Koudougou (Hoper Volta); Monsignor Andre van den Bronk, Bishop of Parakou (Dahomey); Monsignor Lucien Agboka, Bishop of Abomey; Monsignor Christophe Adimou, Bishop of Lokossa (Dahomey); Monsignor Barthelemy Hanrion, Bishop of Dapango (Togo).

    The Archbishop of Conakry, Monsignor Raymond-Marie Tchidimbo, is also member of the council. He is in jail in Guinea serving a life sentence on charges arising form last year's abortive coup against President Sekou Tours.
