    Since the end of compulsory military service in the United States, the army has been hard pressed to find enough men to fill the vacancies in the armed forces.

    The draft - as compulsory military service is known - was bitterly criticised during the Vietnam war, and a career in the U.S. army is still an unpopular choice with young Americans.

    The army has launched a new recruiting drive in an effort to attract more men. Their main problem is recruiting ground soldiers prepared to do the hard, dirty work of combat training.

    One of the arguments against the drive was that it invariably caught the poor and the uneducated. Today's volunteer army has the same problem but the army is using a well-known formula to attract recruits - money. They are widely advertising the fact that the average army pay is 1,500 dollars a year more than the average civilian wage.
