  • Description

An unusual 'border incident' near the Algeria-Tunisia border was the Algerian cycle race filmed by VISNEWS May 28 to 30.

The first part of the course, between Bone and Souk-Ahras, lay among the magnificent scenery of the Medjeida mountain range - a noted area of rebel activity in the Algerian war. It was the first event of the kind to be held in this region for five years. The second part of the course - measuring in all about 110 miles - was from Souk-Ahras to Tebessa.

The race had a political rather than sporting air about it. No cyclists of any great note took part, and the Army and Government authorities were believed to be anxious to show that it is now possible to move about in complete freedom in the immediate vicinity of the electrified "death barrage" or "Maurice Line" set up along the border by the former French Minister, M. Andre Maurice.

Some security measures were taken along the border for the race, however, but there were no unfortunate political incidents.
