    The ashes of Marshal Georgi Zhukov, hero of the Soviet fight against Nazi Germany, were laid to rest in Moscow's Kremlin Wall today (June 21).

    Muscovites had an opportunity to pay a final tribute as the urn containing the ashes of Marshal Zhukov were drawn for two miles (three kms) through the heart of Moscow on a gun carriage.

    Communist Party Secretary Leonid Brezhnev and other Soviet leaders listened to the funeral eulogy by Marshal Andrei Grechko, the Defence Minister.

    Marshal Zhukov died, aged 77, on Tuesday. He emerged as the foremost Soviet hero of World War Two. At his death, he had been four times decorated as Hero of the Soviet Union, received six Lenin Awards and a host of other decorations. He was given command on the western front by Stalin to save Moscow, went on to push the German armies back from Stalingrad and later entered Berlin.

    SYNOPSIS: The ashes of Marshal Zhukov, the Soviet Union's most honoured hero of World War Two, were carried through the streets of Moscow on Friday to a last resting place in the Kremlin wall. He was given command of the Western Front in World War Two by Stalin in order to save Moscow, and went on to win the titanic siege of Stalingrad and finally enter Berlin in triumph.

    At his death, he had been four times decorated as Hero of the soviet Union, received six Lenin Awards and a host of other decorations.

    Defence Minister Marshal Grechko spoke the funeral eulogy. Marshal zhukov had died on Tuesday aged seventy-seven. Tens of thousands of Muscovites had paid final homage while his body was lying in state.

    Communist Party Secretary Leonid Brezhnev and President Podgorny carried the ashes to the Kremlin Wall. Though he later lost favour with Stalin and with Premier khrushchev, under the present leadership Marshal Zhukov had regained his reputation as a living legend, who helped make the Soviet Union into the greatest military power in Europe and Asia.

    His ashes were placed in the Kremlin Wall next to the remains of a pre-war Red Army commander. Detachments of all the Soviet armed forces later marched past in a final military salute to a famous war hero.
