Life is just a bed of rodes for the people of Lottum - a small village in Limburg, Southern Holland. It has to be; for their livelihood depends upon the quality and quantity of the bush roses they produce annually in their nursery gardens.
The villagers are not concerned commercially so much with the blooms as with the actual bushes which they export to all parts of the world.
But it would be a write to throw away all those beautiful blooms so in August each year the village holds its own Rose Festival - a show that would cost thousands of pounds to put on commercially.
More than a million blooms are used in the make-up of the mosaics and floral models, and thousands of man-hours. But the effect is adequate compensation.
