Background: Fighting continues in the jungles of Kampuchea between groups opposed to the presence of 200,000 Vietnamese troops in the country and the Vietnamese themselves. The northern-western sector of the country is dotted with settlements controlled by the Khmer People's National Liberation Front (KPNLF).It is from these settlements that the 5, 000 guerrillas launch attacks on Vietnamese positions. This rare film shows one of the KPNLF guerrilla battalions on reconnaissance patrol.

SYNOPSIS: This group is from Souk Sann which has 150 men.The soldiers are shown crossing Tatiak River before a night attack on Vietnamese positions at Plum Tepedi 80 kilometres (50 miles) inside Kampuchea. It is of considerable strategic importance since it is on the Phnom Penh to Battambang railway.

This gruesome picture was taken after the guerrillas repulsed a Vietnamese attack on their camp.

The patrol moves through the jungle. The men are highly trained for this sort of warfare. There are eight training camps. The guerrillas are followers of Son Sann, a former Cambodian Prime Minister who opposes the present Vietnamese backed government of Heng Samrin. After starting from virtually nothing two years ago the guerrillas have become a force to be reckoned with.Son Sann has been chosen to head a coalition government to be formed by his group, the Khmer Rouge and the Moulinaka guerrillas of Prince Sihanouk. The Khmer Rouge has the largest force of 30,000 to 50,000 men.Prince Sihanouk, has only a few hundred armed supporters but he retains widespread sympathy.

The strength of the KPNLF can be gauged by the fact that these three Vietnamese defected to them. The man in the centre is First Lieutenant Le Van Sung, a commander in the Vietnamese Army.On the right is Nguyan Anh Huan a driver and on the left Nguyan Van Cong an electrician. They defected on 31 October.
