  • Description

For the third time in recent months, United States naval vessels have called at the Israeli port of Haifa. The visits have heightened speculation that the United States is considering using Haifa as a base instead of Malta. To date there has been no official comment on this suggestion.

SYNOPSIS: The latest arrival were the Sixth Fleet destroyer Aylwin, accompanied by a nuclear-powered submarine. The two vessels arrived last Thursday (15 June) on what their commanders described as a short visit to a country their fellow sailors recommended as the most hospitable anywhere. Other recent American visitors have been the 5,000 men aboard the aircraft carrier, Nimitz.

The submarine Lapon, also from the Sixth Fleet, arrived for a four-day stay after visiting La Spezia in Italy. The destroyer scheduled to spend six days at Haifa, had come from Alexandria and was the first U.S. naval ship ever to go directly to Israel form egypt. Both commanders told Israeli reporters that there was no connection whatsoever between their visit and the final Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon.
