  • Description

ABOUT 600 LONDON DOCKWORKERS PROTESTED OUTSIDE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TODAY WHILE INSIDE, THE HOME SECRETARY, JAMES CALLAGHAN, LAUNCHED A HEATED DEBATE ON A NEW RACIAL DISCRIMINATION BILL.

THE CROWD, YELLING "KEEP BRITAIN WHITE", STOOD OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT WAVING BANNERS AND SINGING "BYE-BYE BLACKMAN" TO COLOURED PASSERS-BY. THE DOCKWORKERS WALKED OFF THEIR WHARF JOBS THIS MORNING.

THE NEW RACE BILL HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS A MEASURE TO HEAD OFF THE KIND OF RACIAL DISASTERS SIMILAR TO THOSE IN THE UNITED STATES. THE DOCKER'S LEADER, HARRY PEARLMAN, SAID THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE NOT RACIALISTS BUT TRUE BRITONS CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR JOBS.

IN THEIR PROTEST, THE DOCKERS CHAMPIONED A FORMER CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT MINISTER, ENOCH POWELL, WHO WAS SACKED FROM THE INNER CIRCLE OF CONSERVATIVE LEADERS FOR A SPEECH HE MADE ON SATURDAY IN WHICH HE ATTACKED THE RACE BILL. HE ALSO SUGGESTED THAT IMMIGRANTS ALREADY IN BRITAIN SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO GO HOME.

THE RACE BILL DOES NOT MAKE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION A CRIMINAL OFFENCE, BUT IT DOES PROVIDE REDRESS FOR DISCRIMINATION IN JOBS, HOUSING, EDUCATION AND FINANCIAL FIELDS LIKE INSURANCE.
