  • Description

BRITAIN SCORCHED HOME TO VICTORY IN A MOTOR-CYCLE MATCH AGAINST SWEDEN AT WIMBLEDON SPEEDWAY STADIUM (U.K.) TONIGHT (12 JUNE).

THE MATCH WAS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF FIVE SPEEDWAY 'TEST MATCHES' BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. THE SWEDES, WHO FINISHED AS RUNNERS-UP TO BRITAIN IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WEMBLEY (U.K.) LAST YEAR, HAD CHOSEN A STRONG TEAM TO TRY AND RE-ESTABLISH THEMSELVES AS WORLD SPEEDWAY LEADERS. MOST OF THEIR RIDERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH BRITISH TRACKS, HAVING RIDDEN IN THE PAST FOR BRITISH TEAMS.

BRITAIN'S TEAM, HOWEVER, LOOKED HARD TO BEAT. CAPTAINED BY NEW ZEALANDER BARRY BRIGGS, FOUR TIMES WORLD CHAMPION, IT ALSO INCLUDED TWO OTHER NEW ZEALANDERS: EX-WORLD CHAMPION, RONNIE MOORE, AND CURRENT WORLD CHAMPION IVAN MAUGER.

AND IN THIS MEETING, AT LEAST, THE QUALITY OF THE BRITISH TEAM WAS PROVED BEYOND DOUBT. IN MANY OF THE HEATS, BRITISH RIDERS TOOK TWO OUT OF THE FIRST THREE PLACES. MOORE DID PARTICULARLY WELL, AND BRIGGS, WHO COLLIDED WITH SWEDISH RIDER HARRYSSON IN THE SIXTH HEAT, STILL MANAGED TO COME HOME THIRD.

THE FINAL RESULT WAS BRITAIN 68, SWEDEN 40 POINTS. BUT THERE ARE STILL ANOTHER FOUR MATCHES AT NEWPORT, LEICESTER, HALIFAX AND CRADLEY HEATH BEFORE THE SERIES IS FINALLY DECIDED.
