  • Description

President Makarios of Cyprus has said that there could be a danger of his country being attacked by Turkey if fighting broke out between Greece and Turkey over the Aegean dispute.

SYNOPSIS: He was speaking in Athens on Friday (13 August), when he arrived for brief talks on the Cyprus question with the Greek Prime Minister, Constantine Karamanlis. Later in the day he was due to leave for Sri Lanka to attend the Non-Aligned Summit Conference. President Makarios told newsmen at Athens airport that a Turkish attack on Cyprus should not be excluded if Greece and Turkey were to become involved in a military confrontation.

The current tension between Turkey and Greece began when Turkey sent a survey ship on an oil-prospecting mission into an area of the Aegean which is disputed by both countries. Nearly half of Cyprus was occupied by Turkish troops in the summer of 1974.

President Makarios told the newsmen that nobody knew how far Turkey could go. But if Turkey put an end to its provocative acts, then he believed that military confrontation would be averted.

President Makarios was expected to arrive in Sri Lanka late on Friday evening, where the capital, Colombo, has taken on the atmosphere of an armed camp.
