Background: France's President Charles de Gaulle arrived in Washington from Canada April 22 for his visit to the United States. He and Madame de Gaulle were by President Eisenhower, and by a crowd of spectators not so large as for Mr. Khrushchev' visit but more enthusiastic. It was his first visit to Washington for 15 year, and he is staying there for 4 days for talks with President Eisenhower before visiting other American cities.
At a Washington press conference he said the big task for the May Summit conference in Paris is to improve East-West relation. He did not expect a solution to particular problems like the Berlin question but if East-West relation improved, then solutions would gradually appear - solutions which no-one would think of proposing at present.
