    MALI CELEBRATED THE EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INDEPENDENCE WITH A RALLY IN ITS CAPITAL, BAMAKO. THE MEETING, ATTENDED BY A LARGE CROWD, WAS ADDRESSED BY THE COUNTRY'S PRESIDENT, MODIBO KEITA. IT WAS FOLLOWED BY A MARCH-PAST OF ARMED FORCES AND CIVILIAN GROUPS, SOME IN COLOURFUL TRADITIONAL COSTUMES. THE ANNIVERSARY WAS HELD ON SUNDAY (SEPTEMBER 22).

    IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT MODIBO KEITA STRESSED THAT MALI'S COMMITMENT TO SOCIALISM WAS IRREVERSIBLE. HE DREW ATTENTION TO THE COUNTRY'S ACHIEVEMENTS SINCE INDEPENDENCE. THESE INCLUDED FACTORIES BUILT, WORK BEGUN ON A NEW AIRPORT, AND THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN ATTENDING SCHOOL DOUBLED.

    REFERRING TO THE INTERNATIONAL SITUATION, THE PRESIDENT CONDEMNED WHAT HE TERMED 'IMPERIALISM WHICH RAVAGES VIETNAM AND THE PORTUGUESE COLONIES WITH THE COMPLICITY OF NATO', AND WHICH 'HAS CREATED A NEW KATANGA IN NIGERIA BY ARMING THE REBELS'.

    HE CALLED ON A UNITED FRONT OF POOR COUNTRIES AGAINST THE RICH.

    AMONG THE MESSAGES OF SUPPORT WERE THOSE OF NORTH VIETNAM'S PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH AND OF THE SOVIET UNION'S LEADERSHIP WHICH CALLED FOR A STRENGTHENING OF 'SOCIALIST AND ANTI-IMPERIALIST FORCES.'
