    Background: POWERFUL SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES LOYAL TO GENERAL NGUYEN KHANH, THE CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES, SWEPT BACK INTO SAIGON ON SATURDAY (20 FEB) TAKING THE CITY WITHOUT A SHOT BEING FIRED.

    THE LOYAL FORCES SWEPT SMOOTHLY INTO SAIGON ON A COORDINATED DRIVE ON SATURDAY MORNING, MEETING NO RESISTANCE FROM 45 REBEL TANKS, ARTILLERY OR REBEL TROOPS. THE LOYAL TROOPS, LED BY GENERAL NGUYEN BAO TRI, COMMANDER OF THE SEVENTH DIVISION, WERE PART OF A COLUMN OF SOLDIERS AND ARMOURED CARS WHICH ENTERED INTO THE CITY FROM THE NORTH AND SOUTH.

    A TOTAL OF 15 OFFICERS AND FORMER OFFICERS IMPLICATED IN THE REVOLT HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO SURRENDER THEMSELVES OR BE TRIED BEFORE A MILITARY COURT.

    MEANWHILE, GOVERNMENT, MILITARY AND COUP LEADERS HAVE AGREED TO MEET TO IRON OUT THEIR DIFFERENCES.

    THE REBEL TROOPS WERE ORDERED TO LEAVE THE CITY AND TO RETURN TO THEIR RESPECTIVE POSTS. GOVERNMENT TANKS STOOD BY AS THE TROOPS BOARDED THEIR VEHICLES TO LEAVE THE RADIO STATION. THE MILITARY ACTIVITIES AT THE RADIO STATION ALSO ATTRACTED MANY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO THE SCENE. THE REBEL TROOPS WERE ESCORTED OUT OF THE CITY BY GOVERNMENT TANKS AND ARMOURED VEHICLES.

    A PRESS CONFERENCE BY TOP MILITARY GENERALS ON SATURDAY SAID THAT THE ONE-DAY COUP HAD COLLAPSED. THE CONFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BY GENERALS NGUYEN VAN THIEU, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, NGUYEN CHANH THI, COMMANDER OF THE NORTHERNMENOST MILITARY AREAS AND NGUYEN CAO KY, COMMANDER OF THE AIR FORCE. GENERAL THI SAID THE REBELS HAD LIED IN THEIR BROADCASTS ABOUT TWO SUPPORTED THEM.
