Background: Naval units of Japan's Defence Forces recently took part in an exercise off Izu Peninsula - southwest of Tokyo.
Held under the inspection of Admiral Mihara, manoeuvres involved most of the Japanese Navy/s tonnage of 111,000 - ranging from destroyers to costguard vessels with a total complement of some 33,000 officers and men. Air support was given by the Navy's 210 aircraft, mainly reconnaissance planes equipped with submarine detection radar.
Japan's present navy is only a fraction of her former naval forces which included the 72,000-ton "Yamato", sunk off Okinawa in 1945. The country's combined manpower in the three services is given as 210,000, and the national budget is said to comprise 16% for defence.
