  • Description

United States high jumper Dwight Stones set a new world indoor high jump record at Madison Square Gardens on Friday (21 February) Stones cleared the bar at 7 feet 5 3/4 inches (2.28 metres) on his second attempt at that height.

Earlier he'd won the high jump event when his closest competitor at the meet failed to clear 7 feet 2 inches (2.18 metres). Earlier this month Stones was robbed of the record in California because of a mistake in measuring the height of the bar. Last week he took no such chances and checked the height personally.

Other records fell during the meeting.

Australian pole vaulter Don Baird who was very much a dark horse cleared 17 feet 9 inches (5.41 metres) for a meet record.

Tanzanian Filbert Bayi -- current king of the 1,500 metres -- led the field all the way in the men's event. Although his final time wasn't spectacular, on the way he lowered the world indoor record for three-quarters of a mile from 3 minutes 1.2 seconds to 3.00 minutes dead.

American Francis Larrieu set a new meet record in the women's 1,500 metres in 4 minutes 17,4 seconds.

In the men's 1,000 metres American Rick Walhuter -- who lacked the top class competition needed to break records -- romped home in 2 minutes 22.2 seconds ... only a few seconds outside the world record.

In the women's 800 metres Cheryl Toussaint coasted home looking as though she still had plenty in reserve as she breasted the tape.
