  • Description

Weary firefighters battled on Thursday (17 July) to control an erratic, four-day-old fire driving through explosive chaparral bush and threatening rare bighorn sheep and wild cattle in Anza Borrego State Park, Warner Springs, California, U.S.A.

Some 700 men fought along a ragged nine-mile (15 kilometre) line to contain a blaze that has blackened 8,600 acres, destroyed several buildings and forced the evacuation of 15 people.

The fire began Monday afternoon and spread through the oily brush and grazing land into the San Ysirdo Mountains, about 50 miles north of San Diego.

Flames licking up to 15 and 20 feet in height charged into the Anza Borrego State Park threatening the extremely rare bighorn sheep, and cattle that are direct descendants of the first herefords brought into California in the 1800's.

Forestry officials are looking to cooling temperatures and rising humidity to help contain the fire.
