  • Description

West Germany's Hartwig Steenken on Goya took all his skill to win the Radio Rentals/Punhill Grand Prix in an action packed finale at the Olympic last night (19 December). Britain's Harvey Smith was runner up and Tony Newbury finished third.

SYNOPSIS: Nine horses went clear in the first round. Not everyone however was quite a successful. Belgium's Francois Mathy on Gai Luron, who won the Olympic Bronze medal, had a great deal of difficulty when he crashed into one of the parallel fences.

Mathy finally completed the round in 54.8 seconds with 18 and 4/3 faults.

Britain's Harvey Smith on Olympic Star worked against the clock, setting the standard with a fast attacking clear round. He finished in 28.6 seconds.

Smith's victory was short lived however when Steenken immediately cut the time to 27.3 seconds.

Steenken's first earned him the GBP4,000 Radio Rental Grand Prix Prize. Harvey Smith was just edged out, to receive second place and Tony Newbury opted for caution and third place, with the only other clear round on Warwick III.
