  • Description

Residents in northern Western Australia are clearing up after one of the worst cyclones in recent years. Cyclone Trixie struck with little warning early last week and the full force hit the towns of Karratha and Dampier on Tuesday and Wednesday (18 and 19 February).

Winds of 200 miles an hour (320 km) and blinding rain lashed the centres causing widespread damage. Dampier, a mineral loading port, received the full fury of Cyclone Trixie. Houses were destroyed and communications cut.

The cyclone made its way down the coast smashing thorough another mining outlet, Karratha, before heading out to sea and towards oil fields around Barrow Island. Fortunately it lost most of its fury before reaching the fields and there was no real damage.
