  • Description

A United Nations mission arrived in Nauakchott on Wednesday (4 June) to confer with leaders of Mauritania, including President Moktar Ould Daddah, on the problems of the Spanish Sahara.

The delegates -- led by Mr. Simion Ake of Ivory Coast -- were greeted at the airport by the Mauritanian Foreign Minister Hamdi Ould Mouknass. They later met their host, President Ould Daddah, for a special audience.

Mauritania supports a United Nations call for Spain to end its occupation of the Western Sahara. In February 1973, the United Nations passed a resolution urging Spain -- in consultation with Morocco and Mauritania -- to grant the territory its independence.

The U.N. delegates -- who had also visited the Sahara territory, Morocco, Algeria and Spain, as part of their mission -- were due to contact people from Spanish Sahara, now living in Mauritania.

Mauritania authorities have said that those Saharic people in Mauritania do not live in refugee camps, but they are completely integrated into the local community. They added that on the whole, they are accorded the same right as Mauritanian citizens.
