Background: A popular cycling attraction for British Easter crowds Mar 31, was the 58th Southern Counties Cycling Union meeting at Herne Hill, London. Many international cyclists competed.
An early event was the 3-mile 'Consolation Scratch Race'. Winner of this was Dave Russell of Britain, (No 47), in 6 minutes, 58 seconds. D. Coldicott of Britain (No 36) was second.
There were cheers during the main contest when, in an exciting finish, Italian Olympic tandem gold medallist, Giuseppe Beghetto, won the GBP1200 "Champion of Champions" cycle sprint trophy.
Twenty-year-old Beghetto (No 1), beat the strong British combination of National Champion Lloyd Binch, (No 51), and Karl Barton, (No 58), in this 1000-metre final of the big amateur sprint.
In the early stages, Beghetto let Barton make the running. It was in the last 300 yards that the pace speeded up considerably and, on the last banking, the Italian came up to beat Barton by inches.
Winner Beghetto covered the last 200 metres in 12.2 secs. Barton was second and Binch was in third place.
