The Foreign Minister of Sierra Leons, Mr. Desmond Luke - on a five-day visit to?

  • Description

The Foreign Minister of Sierra Leons, Mr. Desmond Luke - on a five-day visit to Ghana - visited the University of Ghana at Legon on Wednesday (January 29) to discuss the possible exchange of students and academic staff between the two countries.

He was greeted by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adjei Bekoe, and they settled down to talks about an exchange programme and the possibility to scholarships for each other's visiting students.

Professor Bekoe said that the Federation of African universities had approached the Commonwealth University Council and asked that the money now being used to send academic staff from African Commonwealth countries to England, be made available for their own exchange programmes.

Although a favourable answer had been received from the Council, according to the professor, the funds had not yet been provided.

The two agreed that there should be closer links between their countries' universities.

Mr. Luke inspected the university's extensive facilities, including the modern library.

The Foreign Minister's efforts to promote greater contact between African nations in the educational sphere reflect his concern for full African self-determination. On his arrival in Ghana, Mr. Luke had called on African states to redouble their efforts to end colonialism, saying that Africa "shall be free only when every inch of her territory is in the hands of Africans".
