    DELEGATES FROM 18 AFRICAN AND ASIAN COUNTRIES, AS WELL AS OBSERVERS FROM SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS, ATTENDED THE AFRO-ASIAN SEMINAR ON ART, LITERATURE AND CULTURE WHICH BEGAN ON THURSDAY IN LAHORE, PAKISTAN.THE SEMINAR WAS HELD AT LAHORE'S NEW UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, AND ABOUT 1,000 GUESTS, INCLUDING WRITERS, ARTISTS, TEACHERS, LAWYERS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TOOK PART.

    THE SEMINAR'S OPEN SESSION WAS HELD IN THE CAMPUS AUDITORIUM, WHICH WAS DECORATED WITH MULTI-COLOURED LIGHTS AND THE FLAGS OF PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES.PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN OF PAKISTAN, WHO INAUGURATED THE SEMINAR, ARRIVED WITH THE SHAH OF PERSIA.

    IN HIS INAUGURAL ADDRESS, PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN EXPRESSED DEEP CONCERN OVER THE FUTURE OF THE UNITED NATIONS.HE SAID THAT IF IT DISINTEGRATED, THE MAJOR POWERS WOULD ADJUST THEMSELVES TO THE NEW SITUATION, BUT THE VOICE OF THE SMALLER NATIONS WOULD BE LOST IN THE WILDERNESS.THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT THOUGH THE UNITED NATIONS HAD ITS LIMITATIONS, IT STILL SERVED AS A FORUM FOR SMALLER NATIONS TO INFLUENCE WORLD OPINION.

    AFTER HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN JOINED THE SHAH OF PERSIA IN GREETING THE OFFICIAL FOREIGN DELEGATES, WHO WERE SEATED IN THE FRONT ROWS OF THE AUDITORIUM.THE OPENING SESSION OF THE SEMINAR LASTED NEARLY THREE AND A HALF HOURS, DURING WHICH DELEGATES PRESENTED THEIR PAPERS.

    IN ALL, 21 SPEAKERS ADDRESSED THE OPENING SESSION, MOSTLY ON THE UNITY AND SOLIDARITY OF THE AFRO-ASIAN NATIONS.THE SPEAKERS EXPRESSED THE BELIEF THAT CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, NO MATER HOW VARIED, COULD HELP GREATLY IN PRESERVING UNITY.THE SPEAKERS ALSO WELCOMED THE INFLUENCE OF THE WESTERN CIVILISATION, AS LONG AS IT DID NOT OVERSHADOW AFRO-ASIAN CULTURE.

    ONE OF THE SPEAKERS WAS PAKISTAN'S FOREIGN MINISTER, MR.ZULIFKAR ALI BHUTTO, WHO PRESIDED OVER THE SESSION.HE SAID THE GROWTH OF AFRO-ASIAN SOLIDARITY WAS STRIKING BECAUSE THE CONTINENTS OF AFRICA AND ASIA DID NOT CONFORM TO ANY KNOWN CONCEPT OF REGIONALISM.
