An underwater recovery team sponsored by the West Australian Museum is engaged in collecting items from a wreck half a mils (km) off the coast, 20 miles north of Perth.

The wreck of the barque "Eglinton" has been on the sea-bed for 120 years, and the recovery team has been amazed to find the cargo still well-preserved.

Articles found so far, include glasses, Ever-ware and ceramic water- filters and pots. The divers have also found more than 20 bottles of liquor.

Experts predict the find will be of immense value to the history of Perth and other West Australian settlements.

SYNOPSIS: On the Western coast of Australia, about 20 miles north of Perth, under-water divers have been recovering cargo and fittings from a barque which sank almost 120 years ago. The wreck was discovered earlier this year by two young swimmers, and the West Australian Museum immediately took charge of recovery operations. Articles recovered so far include glasses, ceramic water-filters and printing plates intended for the early Swan River colony merchants.

Material recovered from the sea bed is being taken immediately by the divers to the surface for preliminary examinations. After sorting, it's packed into bags and taken to the museum's conservation laboratory and prepared for restoration work. The wreck, of the 462-ton "Eglinton", is regarded by experts as being extremely important to the documentation of Perth's colonial history.
