Background: The Soviet cellist and conductor, Mstislav Rostropovich, today (Thursday) makes his first concert appearance abroad this year when he conducts the Bolshoi Theatre Company in a production of Prokofiev's "War and Peace" in Vienna. Rostropovich was reported to have been banned from travelling abroad last year after he wrote an open letter complaining about the treatment of the disgraced Russian novelist, Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

SYNOPSIS: The Soviet cellist and conductor, Mstislav Rostropovich, is in Vienna, Austria, for his first overseas performances this year. In this interview, soon after his arrival, Rostropovich said his last appearance abroad had been in December. He said he had given more than two hundred performances in the Soviet Union last year. He arrived from Tbilisi, in Georgia, on September the thirtieth.

In two weeks Rostropovich will visit Japan where he will give thirty performances, both playing the cello and as a conductor. He will also visit the United States later this year.

In Vienna, Rostropovich is conducting the Bolshoi Theatre Company in three performances of Prokofiev's War and Peace. He and the company are in Vienna as part of the currant exchange of cultural contacts between Austria and the Soviet Union. Early ticket sales guaranteed the tour would be a success. Queues for sets and standing room were said to have broken all records for comparable events in Vienna. Rostropovich's wife, Galina Vishnevskaya will sign in two performances.
