    MEN OF THE FIFTH BATTALION, THE ROYAL MALAY REGIMENT, WHO ARRIVED IN SARAWAK BY SEA AND AIR FROM MALAYA EARLY NOVEMBER FOR ACTIVE SERVICE, HAVE UNDERTAKEN THE TASK OF CLEARING A LARGE PORTION OF THE JUNGLE IN BAU WHICH FACES THE INDONESIAN BORDER.

    SITUATED ABOUT 2,000 YARDS OF HALF AN HOUR'S WALK FROM THE BORDER, THE VILLAGE OF BAU HAS BEEN RAIDED MANY A TIME BY HUNGRY INSURGENTS. BUT NOW WITH THE PRESENCE OF MALAYSIAN TROOPS HERE, THE RAIDS HAVE CEASED.

    SINCE THEIR ARRIVAL, SOME OF THE MEN, OPERATING WITH SECURITY FORCES, HAVE KILLED ON INSURGENT AND CAPTURED SEVERAL OTHERS IN THE LOWER REJANG AREA RECENTLY.

    THE BATTALION WAS FORMED IN JULY 1951 AND TOOK ACTIVE PART DURING THE EMERGENCY IN MALAYA IN THE ANTI-TERRORIST CAMPAIGN ELIMINATING 39 BANDITS. THE SOLDIERS ARE SEASONED JUNGLE FIGHTERS.
