  • Description

HOLLAND HAS BEEN OFTEN CALLED 'THE LAND OF WINDMILL', AND WITH JUSTIFICATION. FOR IN NO OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRY ARE THE STONE TOWERS WITH THEIR SAILS IN CRUCIFORM TO BE FOUND IN SUCH PROFUSION.

THE WINDMILL - IMMORTALISED IN THE PAGES OF CERVANTES - IS OF PERSIAN ORIGIN. IT FIRST BECAME POPULAR IN EUROPE IN THE 12TH CENTURY AND PROSPERED UNTIL THE 19TH, WHEN MECHANICAL INNOVATIONS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION BROUGHT MORE EFFICIENT MEANS OF POWER INTO GENERAL USE. ONLY IN HOLLAND DID THE WINDMILL SURVIVE AS A PRACTICAL TOOL FOR THE MAN ON THE LAND.

TODAY, ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING GROUPS OF MILLS IS TO BE FOUND AT KINDERDIJK, IN THE NIEUW-LEKKERLAND DISTRICT. THERE ARE SEVENTEEN IN ALL, AND THEY HANDLE THE DRAINAGE OF EXCESS RAIN-WATER FROM THE POLDERS OF NIEUW-LEKKERLAND.

THE KINDERDIJK MILLS PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN PRESERVING THE WORK OF THOSE DUTCH ENGINEERS WHO RECLAIMED THE LEKKERLAND POLDERS FROM UNDER THE WATER. AS THE LAND IS BELOW SEA AND RIVER LEVEL, THE EXCESS RAINFALL - WHICH IS PARTICULARLY HEAVY IN WINTER - MUST BE CARRIED OFF.

EACH MILL IS FITTED WITH A SCOOP-WHEEL WHICH LIFTS THE EXCESS WATER TO A HIGHER LEVEL AND THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS LINKED TO A RESERVOIR FROM WHICH SLUICE GATES CARRY THE EXCESS TO NEARBY RIVERS. SINCE 1730, THE MILLS OF KINDERDIJK, THE WIND PERMITTING, HAVE DAILY BEEN PERFORMING THIS VITAL TASK. OF COURSE, THERE MAY BE OTHER WAYS AND MEANS IN WHICH THIS COULD BE DONE, BUT NOT SO ROMANTICALLY AS BY THE SEVENTEEN MILLS IN NIEUW-LEKKERLAND.
