  • Description

Rescue workers searched the wreckage of a British Comet jet on Saturday (July 4) searching for identification of the II2 people who died when the plane crashed into a mountain outside Barcelona, late of Friday night.

The plane came down near the spot where a British-owned Dakota aircraft bound for London crashed in I959 killing 32 people, most of whom were returning holiday-makers.

The Spanish Air Force announced that all 105 passengers-- mostly holiday-makers from the north of England-- and 7 crew members had not survived the crash into a 6,000 foot (1,800 metre) peak of the Montseny mountain range.

Police searching the area near the summit of "Las Agudas" (Needle point) peak sad they were convinced the plane exploded on impact and the passengers had no time to realise what happened. The jetliner lost radio contact with the airport control tower in Barcelona as it came in to land at 7.30 local time on Friday night.

A rescue helicopter located the wreckage of the plane at about 32 miles (52 kms) north of Barcelona-- two hours later.

Wreckage was strewn over a side area of the pine-forested mountain slope. Holidaymakers' sunglasses, a baby's rattle, passports, and beach apparel was littered on the grass.

About 30 villagers from Arbucias, six miles (I0 kms) from the disaster scene, helped police and other workers lift the wreckage and reclaim passengers' charred personal belongings which will be used to help with the identification of bodies.

The Comet's "black box", and instrument for defining the causes of plane accidents, has been discovered intact. Villagers said they did not hear noise at the time of the crash.
