Background: Millions of carnations were used as ammunition in this year's Battle of Flowers at Ventimiglia, near the Italian-French border. The battle proper followed a two-hour parade through the streets, which was watched by more than 70,000 people.

French and Italian folklore tableau were featured among the parade's 19 large floats. Beautiful Italian girls were dressed in rich traditional costumes. Ten brass bands lifted music above the roar of the crowds. It was estimated that about three million carnations had been used to decorate the floats.
