  • Description

Manual Orantes of Spain beat a tired and off-form Bob Hewitt of South Africa to take the men's singles title at the Monaco World Championship Tennis Tournament on Sunday (30 March).

Orantes was in superb form all week and left Hewitt no chance punching his forehand deep and wide to win 6-2,6-4.

Hewitt has been suffering from the effects of an operation to his achilles tendon and although he regained much of his old magic he could not hold the Spaniard who is nine years his junior.

As Orantes moved him around the court with astute drop shots and changes of angle the South African moved slower and slower to the ball and was forced time and time again into errors.

Her later went on to win the men's double title with his long-standing partner, frew McMillan of South Africa.

They beat Arthur Asha of the United States and Dutchman Tom Okkar 6-2,6-3.
