  • Description

Lady Fleming, widow of the discoverer of penicillin, was jailed for 16 months by a Greek military tribunal yesterday (Tuesday). Lady Fleming, aged 62, was arrested last month for her part in plotting the prison escape of Alexandros Panagoulis, the soldier sentenced for attempting to assassinate Greek Prime Minister George Papadopoulos in August 1968.

Three other defendants who stood trial alongside Greek-born Lady Fleming also received sentences of between 15 and 13 months. A fifth dependant, American theology student John Skelton, was given a seven-month sentence. There have been reports that Lady Fleming, who was described during the trial as one of the chief accomplices in the escape plot, may be expelled from Greece within the next few days. She had told the court that her motive in joining the plot had been to save Panagoulis from alleged prison torture.
