  • Description

QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER OFFICIALLY OPENED BRITAIN'S NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS HOUSE -- THE FIRST OF ITS KIND -- IN LONDON'S PARK CRESCENT TODAY (TUESDAY). SHE HAD A WARM WELCOME FOR ALL OVERSEAS STUDENTS AND EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT THE NEW GBP850,000 CENTRE WILL PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES OF INTERNATIONAL LIVING AND MAKE A VITAL CONTRIBUTION TO PEACE AMONG NATIONS IN THE YEARS TO COME.

THE HOSTEL IS THE FIRST PROJECT OF THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TRUST, A CHARITABLE BODY FORMED IN 1962. IT HAS LIVING ACCOMMODATION FOR 135 MEN, BUT ITS MAIN PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE A CLUB AND MEETING PLACE FOR STUDENTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, FROM ABROAD. THERE ARE NOW ABOUT 35,000 OF THESE STUDENTS IN LONDON, AND OVER 60,000 IN THE COUNTRY AS A WHOLE.

THE MAIN ROOMS ARE EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE AND LIGHT. THE ASSEMBLY HALL, SEATING 350, HAS A GOOD-SIZED STAGE FOR PLAYS AND CONCERTS. IN THE LARGE GAMES ROOM THERE ARE BILLIARDS AND TABLE TENNIS AND AN ALLEY FOR 'CHEEZE SKITTLES' -- AND OLD ENGLISH PUBLIC HOUSE GAME IN WHICH A HEAVY WOODEN QUOIT IS LOBBED, RATHER THAN ROLLED, AT THE SKITTLES.

BED AND BREAKFAST COST JUST OVER GBP4 A WEEK, AND THE 135 PLACES WERE OCCUPIED THE MOMENT THEY BECAME AVAILABLE. THE FIRST PRESIDENTS, WHO MOVES IN LAST WEEK, REPRESENTED MORE THAN 40 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND INCLUDED THREE RUSSIANS.

THE TRUST HOPES TO ATTRACT ABOUT 2,000 NON-RESIDENT MEMBERS, AT LEAST 20 PER CENT OF THEM BRITISH. ANYONE WILL BE ELIGIBLE - PROSPECTIVE BUSINESS EXECUTIVES AND INDUSTRIAL APPRENTICES AS WELL AS ACADEMICS - PROVIDED THAT HE OR SHE IS A FULL-TIME STUDENT.

THE HOUSE REPRESENTS THE REALISATION OF A PLAN LONG ENTERTAINED BY MISS MARY TREVELYAN, WHO HAS NOW BECOME ITS FIRST DIRECTOR. COUSIN OF THE LATE G.M. TREVELYAN, THE HISTORIAN, AND SISTER OF THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR ON MOSCOW, WHE WAS FOR 12 YEARS ADVISER TO OVERSEAS STUDENTS AT LONDON UNIVERSITY AND HAD CONSIDERABLE EXPERIENCE IN DEALING WITH THEIR PROBLEMS.

AN ADJOINING FIVE-STOREY OFFICE BLOCK FACING ON TO GREAT PORTLAND STREET IS AN INTERNAL PART OF THE PROJECT. THE BLOCK HAS ALREADY BEEN LET WITH THE RENTS PROVIDING AN INCOME FOR THE HOUSE, ENABLING IT TO MAINTAIN ITS OPERATIONS WITH MODERATE CHARGES AND WITHOUT THE CONSTANT NEED TO SEEK SUBSIDIES OF ONE FORM OR ANOTHER.
